Ruger M77 in 416 Taylor

Post by ruger66 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 10:12 am

I pick this up in a gun shop in MA a while ago. They say there is only between 12-20 of these ever chambered in 416 Taylor. They where never sold. I think Bill Ruger gave them out to friends and events. I don't collect 77's but I really like seeing this one in my safe!

Any idea about who Bob Sampson is/was?? No doubt, one of the rarest of the M77's!

The only Bob Sampson that makes sense is an outdoor writer in Mass. I talked to him. He said he knew both Bill and Bill Jr. He never received one for himself there but over the year pickup many firearms at the factory and a a western Ct gunshop for DU events all over New England. Never really paid much attention to what they were. He is really not much of a gun nut. One rifle and one shotgun kind of guy.

It could have been a gun that was won at one of those events. Who ever had it never really cared for it. It was covered with lots of dried up grease and I don't think the bolt had ever been in the gun.

Well, the "SAVE", serial# and "Bob Sampson" all seem to be written with the same pen. I would offer that Sampson picked it up to donate to an Event that WBR wanted to support.
Just my 2 cents worth!

WANTED: This gun, or something similar, chambered in .450LM, and takes M14 Mags.

This would make me very, very happy. How hard would it be to build???
