I'm considering the purchase of a ""star"" model Single Six which is advertised as having an extra 22 Mag cylinder. I thought ""star"" models were not convertible.
Is this a custom order item available for these guns, or a salesman's gimmick?

Yes, you are correct, the star ""*"" underneath the frame in front of the trigger guard was to signify that it was shipped as a single cylinder gun. I imagine someone could have added an extra magnum cylinder or even sent it back to Ruger and had one fitted to the gun.
